Self-Portrait, 1971, is one of the most affecting of his self-portrayals, painted in patches of color that resemble a smeared and blurred rendition of the techniques of Cèzanne’s late paintings. The nose has affinities with the ’emanations’ in photographs of spiritual mediums in Baron von Schrenck Notzing’s Phenomena of Materialisation.
