It is coolly immaculate and relatively simple in conception. In each panel Freud sits on the same chair, with only the headboard of a brass bedstead behind it. The sharply-delineated parallelepiped structures establish the boundaries of the painted figures (and intersect Freud’s head) except for the foot in each panel that wilfully transcends the internal armature.
